El Papél: 1025

Part of being a revolutionary is creating a vision that is more humane. That is more fun, too. That is more loving. It’s really working to create something beautiful.
— Assata Shakur (REST IN POWER)

Welcome to the October edition of El Papel, a monthly newsletter about all things Sketchboard!

We are nearing the end of our 2025 programming, and what a beautiful ride it has been! From our weekly stints at CAST for long poses to our latest salon theme: Maize Deity. As we head into our last month of events, we are preparing for our second fundraising drive. Our goal is to raise $100k for 2026 and beyond—this would help us with general operations, paying our staff, and more. The team has worked hard to put together copy, graphics, and logistics to bring you a set of events to support us at!

Art and music touch our lives in a way nothing else does. They root us in our experiences, expand our thinking, connect us with each other, and bring pure moments of joy. From volunteer participation to generous donors, this is what makes it all possible.

Sketchboard is a proudly non-profit, community-powered arts organization that relies on the support of individual artists, musicians, volunteers, and donors—who contribute over half of our funding. We can't help but feel the love for our incredible subscribers—over 20 art lovers whose investments make Sketchboard a vibrant, unique interdisciplinary community! Through your contributions—whether volunteering at an event, buying a ticket, or becoming a subscriber—it all matters. And please take a moment to complete our community survey, which will provide crucial data for our grant applications.

Thank you for 12 beautiful years,

Sketchboard

Our very own board member Nick Derenzi, will be premiering his first documentary here! It’s called “Where do we go from here?”

Join us for a dynamic program of performances and activations curated by the artist collective SMARTBOMB. WAVES OF KNOWING is a gathering of energy curated by SMARTBOMB, including over twenty Bay Area artists sharing performance, visuals, films, poetry, and more. Using The Unknown, a San Francisco Art Institute gathering from 1949 as a point of departure, WAVES OF KNOWING explores the power of collective thought, motion, and creation. Rather than focusing on what is unknown in the future, this experience serves as a reminder that, with openness and presence, we already know the path and can find our way forward together.
